Tonight’s concert includes a wide range of musical styles. From Bach’s Baroque solo masterpiece to Ravel’s Impressionism; from Arensky and Goltermann’s Romantic chamber lyricism to Piazzolla’s iconic Argentine tangos; classical legacy and contemporary spirits are resonating in harmony. Together, they are creating a musical landscape that crosses Europe and South America, alternating between peaceful whispers and passionate climaxes. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 3 in C Major unfolds through a Prelude and a sequence of Baroque dances (Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Bourrées, and Gigue). The Prelude shines with bright, flowing melodies, while each dance has its distinct characters: such as the Sarabande uses double stops to evoke contemplative depth, and the Gigue ends with virtuosic rapid passages. This suite, which is rich in expressions and structural precision, displays timeless beauty within the unaccompanied space. Arensky’s String Quartet No. 2 in A Minor stands as an elegy for Tchaikovsky. Its distinctive scoring for violin, viola, and two cellos differs from the traditional string quartet, and produces a texture that is incredibly warm and resonant. Through its expressive harmonies, this piece creates a solemn yet tender mood that is infused with Russian Orthodox chant and folk influences. Ravel’s Bolero is a true masterpiece with its orchestral writing. Built upon a single, recurring motif over ostinato, the melody is passed sequentially through different instruments. Through relentless repetition and steady crescendo, Ravel created tremendous tension that leads into a thrilling climax. Piazzolla’s Libertango incorporates jazz and modern classical approaches to transform traditional tango. Its lyrical melodies, driven by appealing rhythms, embodied Piazzolla’s distinctive chromatic harmonies and dynamic tension while striking a balance between elegance and passion. Goltermann’s Serenade for 4 Cellos contains gentle lyricism and its ternary form (ABA) is harmonically vibrant. With cello’s expressive phrasing and natural soft tones, this classical serenade becomes appealing and romantic. Lastly, Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires pays tribute to Vivaldi while recreating nature through tango: the sizzling summer, gloomy winter, and the vibrant energy from spring and autumn, brilliantly fuses Argentine spirit with Western classical tradition.
