A very unique concert featuring the young piano talent A Bu, whose virtuosity spans the jazz and classical worlds: half of the music on the programme are master classics blending different styles, the other half being original contributions from emerging Chinese composers of Generation Z, including WANG Leyou and A Bu himself. All of the music once again challenges the boundary between classic and modern, elite and popular. The Ukraine-born Nikolai Kapustin has to be one of the best-kept secrets of piano music. Instantly endearing and consistently entertaining, his music treads a delicate stylistic line with flair, combining improvisational jazz idioms and classical music structures. Eight Concert Études are far from dry studies. They caper through genres including blues, ragtime, boogie-woogie, stride piano, and lounge music—all underpinned by a humour and intellect second to none. Friedrich Gulda, an uncompromising “cross-over” pioneer of his time, spoke of a fascination with the boundaries in music, believing all music to have worth, regardless of how society judged it, and you will understand what he means by this through his jazz-infused Prelude and Fugue. What is more worth looking forward to are A Bu and his buddy, the composer/vlogger-influencer Wang Leyou. What kinds of surprises may await? Well, come and let your ears tell you!
