To honor the 50th anniversary of the passing of the great composer Shostakovich, this performance is a heartfelt tribute to the remarkable composer who overcame numerous obstacles in his life. Music has the power to enhance a visual experience, and the film soundtrack is an essential component of the overall artistic creation. The seamless integration of image and music in a film' s narrative is an ultimate test of a composer' s talent, and Shostakovich is exemplary in this regard. The Introduction is based on his 1955 score for the classic film The Gadfly. This concert version is more expansive and showcases the full orchestration. Two of Shostakovich' s cello concerti were dedicated to cellist Rostropovich. Cello Concerto No. 1 in E - flat Major will be performed by young cellist NIE Jiapeng. This piece is widely regarded as one of the most challenging cello concerti to perform, and Rostropovich’ s unmatched ability was renowned in Russia at the time. Although Shostakovich' s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor is his most performed piece and receiving acclaim upon its debut, it was exceptionally challenging to create and stands as a pinnacle of artistic achievement.
